Sleeping with a bulging disc can be challenging for the body to achieve the proper rest. And sleeping in an awkward position can add stress to the spine, making the bulge worse, which can cause tingling, numbness, pain, and digestive problems. This can disrupt the sleep cycle and prevent proper healing of the spinal injury.

Sleeping With a Bulging Disc

When sleeping, most back pain occurs in the lumbar or lower back, in one of two places where the spine meets the pelvis. Around 95% of lower back herniations happen in the L4-L5 spinal segment or the L5-S1 Lumbosacral joint. Any back pain can turn into a vicious cycle of:

• Inconsistent sleep
• Chronic pain
• Chronic fatigue
• Irritability
• Work/School performance
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Immune system compromisation
• Mental health problems
• Depression

Sleeping with a bulging disc requires maintaining the ears, shoulders, and hips aligned to keep the spine aligned.

Sleeping on The Back

Back sleeping done correctly is the best way to sleep for the spine's health. The important thing is to ensure the entire back is supported when sleeping. If there is a gap or space between the mattress and the back, the weight and gravity force the spine to lower in an unnatural way to fill the space. This can cause back muscle soreness, injury, and sciatica. A thin pillow, blanket, or towel can be used to fill the space, giving the spine the support it needs. Back sleepers can also benefit from a pillow or two under the knees to elevate the legs and help maintain the natural curve of the pine.

Sleeping on The Side

Side sleepers can try pulling the legs up toward the chest, and placing a pillow between the knees can provide relief when sleeping with a bulging disc. Pulling the legs up in the fetal position can relieve pressure on the discs. It is recommended to switch sides to keep the spine balanced. This helps maintain hip alignment, which helps keep the spine in a neutral position.

Sleeping On The Stomach

It is recommended to avoid sleeping on the stomach. This pulls the spine down into an unnatural curve that can cause and exacerbate back pain. For individuals that naturally stomach sleep, it is recommended to place a pillow under the hips and lower abdomen to prevent unnatural spinal positioning.

Chiropractic Relief

Utilizing the right sleeping position can provide pain relief and thorough rest. However, sleeping with a herniated disc is far from what is needed to get back to a normal healthy sleeping pattern. This depends on the location of the bulging disc, severity, and cause. A chiropractor can:

• Help heal the bulging disc.
• Realign the spine.
• Maintain long-term relief without recurrence.
• Help the individual develop an optimal sleeping routine and positioning.

Sleep and Growth Hormone In Children

Growth, in all ages, is primarily controlled by growth hormone. The hormone is regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland which plays an important role in sleep. Growth hormone has been found:

• It peaks during the beginning of deep sleep.
• There are multiple smaller peaks during the other stages of sleep.
• Those who have a delay at the beginning of deep sleep have delayed rises in growth hormone levels.

For children to grow they need to have proper levels of growth hormone. This means they need to have the proper amount of sleep for proper body composition. Research has found that increased levels of sleep resulted in less overall fat mass and a reduced percentage of body fat allowing their bodies to grow.

Bulging discs usually present in the lower back. Chiropractic studies have shown that the L4 and L5 segments are more susceptible to stressors that enable and cause the discs to bulge.

These vertebrae shift and become compressed with stress and time. The bulge eventually reaches a point that causes symptoms that include:

• Pain
• Limited range of motion
• Mobility issues

Bulging discs are a common ailment that chiropractors specialize in treating and is one of the most common reasons individuals seek treatment. There is a surprise when individuals learn that spinal adjustments are only part of the solution for relief from bulging discs. Once a chiropractor realigns the vertebrae back into place, the individual must put in the work of preventing any re-bulging.

Once relief has been attained individuals can become hesitant when a chiropractor informs them of the need for posterior chain strengthening. Posterior chain adjustments along with strength exercises are very important for the prevention of further bulging discs and overall optimal spine health. Restoring the lower back's curvature and maintaining alignment requires strengthening the support system. Part of the chiropractic experience is educating patients on how to best maintain their spines.

Posterior chain Identification

A bulging low back disc is more than low back pain. A chiropractor will help an individual identify the posterior chain stimulus that is causing their bulging discs. An example to identify the posterior chain root that is causing the pain, a chiropractor will have an individual perform certain movements to figure out where along the chain the problems are occurring. It could be a weakness in the gluteal muscles or if the chiropractor asks the individual to touch their toes from a standing position and they are unable could show inflexibility.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Bulging discs begin with proper chiropractic adjusting and re-alignment. Palpitation along with radiological imaging will allow a chiropractor to determine which lumbar disc/s is bulging and to what extent. This will determine the treatment protocol that the chiropractor will take.

It can include drop table adjustments that will help shift any misaligned vertebrae, and traction to alleviate compression and inflammation. Depending on age, the severity of the bulge, and the cause of the condition, a combination of adjustment techniques could be utilized.

Strengthening

Once the pain has been addressed, a chiropractor will recommend exercises and stretches to strengthen the posterior chain and its support system. The disc/s that are bulging will be able to realign properly while any further bulges can be avoided. Strengthening is focused on the:

• Gluteal muscles
• Hamstrings
• Quadriceps
• Hip flexors
• Low back

Core strengthening will increase the strength of these muscle groups. This means enhanced support for the entire spine promoting the spine's ability to handle stressors and avoid bulging. Individuals have found benefits from yoga or a specific stretching regimen of the posterior chain. This helps reduce stress in overused/worked muscles that improve flexibility and mobility support systems.

Bulging disc relief

Bulging discs should not be ignored. If left untreated it could lead to more severe complications. To prevent recurring bulges along with low back pain, an individual needs to strengthen the posterior chain. Strengthening, and stretching are all crucial to the chiropractic adjustment process. A customized chiropractic treatment plan will ensure every individual gets the proper support their body needs.

Spinal disc herniation and bulging discs have nearly identical symptoms and can present almost in the same way. Both cause localized pain, nerve impingement, and are treated similarly with chiropractic. In most cases spinal disc herniation is not painful, it is the material that leaks out of the disc that causes pinching, inflammation, and irritates the nerves around the area, causing radicular pain.

Radicular pain/nerve root pain radiates/spreads to other areas of the body, like the low back to down the leg or from the neck down the arm. Leg pain from a pinched nerve usually leads to sciatica. A spinal disc itself can be the source of pain if it is dehydrating or degenerating causing pain and instability in the spinal segment, which is known as degenerative disc disease. Disc degeneration pain tends to include chronic, low-level pain around the disc and infrequent episodes of severe pain.

Spinal Disc Herniation Differences and Similarities

Spinal disc herniation and bulging discs have similar roots that make them difficult to diagnose. Some core comparisons that can be made include:

• Both include pain and tenderness
• Both are caused by cartilage movement/slippage
• They cause nerve pinching and nerve pain
• They occur more often in the neck and lower spinal regions

How they differ:

• Bulging discs protrude
• Herniated discs rupture
• Bulging discs are more common
• Herniated discs are less common
• Bulges are caused by constant pressure
• A herniation is caused by trauma
• Bulging discs create dull radiating pain
• Herniated discs cause sharp intense pain

It is the severity that separates them. Bulging discs tend to be more passive and can be treated with incremental adjustments, while herniated discs usually require a more aggressive adjustment approach.

Injury Effects

How the injury affects the spine and overall wellness is the objective when diagnosing. Bulging discs are often associated with chronic pain that does not go away with time and needs proper treatment. Herniated discs are considered severe because of the disc fluid spilling/leaking out affecting the surrounding nerves. Left untreated, bulging discs lead to intermittent nerve blockages/pinching and posture problems. Herniated disc left untreated leads to chronic nerve pain and permanent nerve damage, which can develop into a series of issues. This includes limited mobility and/or loss of feeling in the affected area.

Early Detection

Chiropractic diagnosis for bulges and spinal disc herniation is recommended because of the specialization in spine care and focusing on all symptoms. For example, although it is not typically this simple, analysis revealing tingling in the fingers and sharp pain in the lower spine indicates herniation. Conversely, dull aches in the low back and down the legs, indicate sciatic pain that can be traced to a disc bulge. Making the correct diagnosis is crucial in developing the right treatment plan. Types of pain

Pain can be grouped into three categories:

• Early warning pain is most recognizable with the withdrawal reflex. For example, touching a scalding hot object and quickly pulling away. A protective mechanism that helps the body avoid danger and is important for survival.
• Inflammatory pain occurs following an injury or surgery when the body is healing and in recovery. Inflammation prevents the body from moving too fast or too hard causing re-injury. This type of pain is important while healing, but is a cause for concern if it continues after the injury has healed.
• Pathological pain happens after the body has healed but the nervous system has suffered damage. This often occurs with individuals that get injured in a way that changes the way the body functions. If the nervous system does not heal properly, the body's protective pain responses can begin to create false alarms and become chronic.
