The most common form of pain is the headache. Whether dealing with a mild, dull ache, severe throbbing, or painful tension along the scalp and neck, headaches can disrupt and get in the way of everyday life. Over-the-counter pain medications can offer temporary relief, but they don’t get to the root and solve the cause. Chiropractic is a safe and effective treatment option that will bring head pain relief and treat what is causing the headache/s.

Triggers

Individuals engage in more sedentary activities, and more hours spent in one fixed position combined with poor posture can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back, and scalp. Headaches can have a variety of causes or triggers. These can include:

• Stress is the most common trigger
• Muscle tension
• Insomnia
• Environmental stimuli - noises, lights, smells
• Dehydration
• Weather changes
• Foods
• Blood sugar changes
• Excessive exercise

Most Common Types

There are two main categories: primary and secondary headaches.

Primary headaches

Primary headaches are when the headache itself is the main problem and is not a symptom of underlying diseases or conditions. These include:

• Cluster headaches
• Migraine
• New daily persistent headaches - NDPH
• Tension headaches
• Secondary headaches

Secondary headaches

These are related to medical condition/s like:

• Sinus congestion
• Medication overuse
• Infection
• High blood pressure
• Trauma
• Head injury
• Diseased blood vessels in the brain
• Tumor

Frequency

Headache pain comes from interacting signals in the brain, blood vessels, and nerves. A mechanism activates specific nerves that affect the muscles and blood vessels, sending pain signals back to the brain. If any of the following is occurring it is recommended to contact a doctor, headache specialist, or chiropractor.

• Three or more headaches a week.
• Headaches that get worse or don't go away.
• Having to take a pain reliever every day or almost every day.
• Need more than 2-3 doses of over-the-counter medications a week to relieve symptoms.
• Headaches triggered by strenuous activity, hard work/exertion, bending, coughing.
• Recent changes in headache symptoms.
• Family history of headaches.

Clinical Description

To get to the root a doctor will ask:

• What time of day/night the headache usually occurs?
• How long does the headache last?
• Where the pain is located?
• Type of pain -  throbbing, comes and goes, dull aching, one-sided, etc. 
• Does the headache come on suddenly without warning or slowly progress?
• Are there other symptoms like weakness, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, decreased appetite, changes in attitude or behavior?

Chiropractic

A chiropractor will assess, diagnose, conduct a physical examination to determine the cause and develop a personalized treatment plan to alleviate the pain and help to manage and prevent headaches. Treatment approaches include:

• A combination of chiropractic manipulative therapy.
• Activate trigger points to release tension and allow for optimal nerve and blood circulation.
• Active and passive exercises.
• Massage.
• Health coaching.

Body Composition

Water

Most of the body is made up of water with the percentage of body composition that is water changing based on individual functional needs. Essential functions of water include:

• Help to build/repair almost every cell in the body.
• Regulating body temperature through sweating and respiration.
• Energy from carbohydrates and proteins is transported by water through the blood.
• Assists in the removal of metabolic waste through urination.
• Acts as a shock absorber to protect the brain and spinal cord.
• Creates saliva/fluids to lubricate the joints.

The amount of water in the body depends on various factors that include:

• Age
• Gender
• Physical activity
• Is often referred to as Total Body Water or TBW.

The most common water comes from lean body mass. This includes blood, organs, and muscle. Major body organs’ water content:

• Lungs – 83%
• Muscles and kidneys – 79%
• Brain and heart – 73%
• Skin – 64%
• Bones – 31%

For individuals that have a partner or spouse with chronic back pain, life can feel like it revolves around the pain. For the individuals going through the pain, it does. The pain can be debilitating to the body, emotional and mentally. The physical and emotional exhaustion of chronic pain can affect a partnership. But with the right support, treatment can be enhanced making the couple's life a lot better.

Partners and spouses with Chronic Pain

Individuals unhealthily deal with chronic pain communication in two ways.

• The first is, the individual dealing with the pain talks frequently about it. This can be viewed as constant complaining, resulting in their spouse or partner becoming irritated, cold, resentful, and frustrated by not knowing or being able to help.

• The second way is, again the individual dealing with the pain wants to avoid sounding needy, never talk about the pain. This means instead they deal with the pain in silence. However, this wears the individual down physically and mentally.

This can turn to self-medicating bringing its own host of consequences. Regardless of how a spouse or partner communicates or not, the objective is to find healthier ways to work through the pain, work as a team, and support one another.

Practical Support

When it comes to normal daily activities, a common concern is the limitation of activities. This can be anything from exercising, standing, or walking. For the spouse or partner, it's the same but instead is on the support/aiding side. The key is to clearly express the type of support they do and don’t feel benefits their pain management. For the spouse/partner, expressing the desire and willingness to provide assistance and empathy provides tremendous encouragement and opens the door to team-based healing.

Exercises and Stretches

Exercise and stretching are an integral part of treatment. There are a variety of exercises that can be done right at home. The addition of a second person is an added benefit. Recommended are easy stretches of the:

• Lower back
• Hamstrings
• Buttocks
• Calves
• These can ease the muscle spasms that usually happen during an episode.

Start with straight leg raises or knee-to-chest stretches while lying on the back. The spouse/partner can help by adding pressure and support to the legs. Additional stretches can be added to the regimen, but the objective when stretching with a partner is communication. This means verbalizing each other's needs and keeping an eye on one another's faces for signs of distress.

Exercising as a pair has the added benefit of support and motivation. Non-impact core strengthening exercises are recommended. This includes yoga and pilates. With all exercise and physical activities, choose courses that are age/ability appropriate. With classes, partners and spouses should inform the instructor of the back pain so they can modify the workout accordingly.

Spousal Partner Massage

A highly beneficial treatment/therapy from a spouse or partner is massage. Professional therapeutic massages provide the greatest relief. However, when not available, having a spouse/partner work out regular short massages around the affected areas provides immense relief. Massaging the body keeps acute conditions from becoming chronic, reducing pain and increasing mobility. This is recommended to fill the gaps in professional chiropractic treatment. Some basic techniques and tips:

• Use broad sweeping strokes with steady pressure across the muscle/s
• Use the heel of the hand to work out the areas
• Use the thumb or knuckle to apply deeper pressure to the area by rubbing in circles or holding down in place
• Use pain cream/ointment and/or massage oil to ease friction and increase blood flow

Daily Tasks

Basic lifestyle adjustments can also help. Breaking up household chores based on those that cause pain flare-ups, and those that don’t can prevent episodes and make life healthier. For example,

• An individual with a disc injury might not be able to flex forward
• An individual with facet syndrome or osteoarthritis could have problems extending upright

Treatment and Recovery

Finding the root cause of the pain and seeking the most effective treatment possible is the goal. Treatment could involve a combination of several approaches.

• Chiropractic
• Physical therapy
• Acupuncture
• Therapeutic massage
• Core-strengthening yoga
• All have been shown to have positive results.

Spousal/partner support through the pain, exercises, stretches, massage, and emotion will go a long way in expediting a healthy treatment plan.

Body Composition

Muscle mass and body health

Many think that muscle gain is only for highly active individuals and athletes. Not everyone wants to be muscular but everybody needs to be able to fight off infection. Protein is an important macronutrient that the body needs to function properly. Muscle is made up of water and protein. When the body enters a stressed state like getting sick, the body’s protein demands go up to four times the amount normally required.

If the body does not obtain the necessary protein it needs from an individual's diet, it will turn to the muscles treating them as protein reserves. When this happens the muscles begin to break down. If the muscles are underdeveloped they have a reduced ability and strength to fight off infections and become more susceptible. Focusing on muscle gain will help with recovery, strength, and function. Focusing on muscle gain will help with recovery, strength, and function.

Analgesics are pain-relieving medications, also known as painkillers. These can be over-the-counter and prescription medications. Either could be part of a treatment plan for spine-related pain. Individuals dealing with back or neck conditions, typically take analgesics to reduce symptoms.

• Analgesics are available over-the-counter/OTC and with a prescription
• Prescription analgesics usually include the more powerful form of over-the-counter medications
• Various analgesics are available in topical form
• Analgesics can be specialized with some to relieve pain, with others reducing inflammation/pain

Over-the-counter

Acetaminophen, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and topical analgesics are the most commonly used medications for various pain symptoms. Over-the-counter analgesics are most effective when taken at the first sign/presentation of acute pain. Whiplash, along with muscle sprains and strains are common injuries known to cause short term pain that can be mild to severe. Follow the medication's instructions on dosage recommendations and precautions.

If the medication does not work or helps manage the pain, and/or pain symptoms worsen, contact your healthcare provider. This could be an indicator that a more powerful prescription analgesic is needed to help manage the pain, along with added therapy like physical therapy, and chiropractic to help avoid dependence on the prescription meds.

Acetaminophen

Tylenol is one form of medication taken for different types of pain and is one of the most popular over-the-counter analgesics. Acetaminophen's purpose is exclusively to relieve pain. It does not reduce inflammation.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - NSAIDs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs work to reduce inflammation and pain. Types of over-the-counter These include:

• Aspirin
• Ibuprofen
• Naproxen

Topical analgesics

Topical analgesics like capsaicin cream and salicylates are an alternative to analgesics taken by mouth. These creams, balms, gels, and sprays are applied to the painful area. It is a very common application and is widely used for joint, muscle, and back pain. Salicylates are plant-based chemicals that operate to decrease the body's production of prostaglandins. These are lipids that let the body know that there is a problem causing inflammation and pain.

Prescription

A doctor could prescribe an analgesic as part of a treatment plan to help manage short-term and chronic pain. It is extremely important to precisely follow the doctor's instructions on how much and when to take the medication. Remember that any of these medications have the potential for side effects, which includes the risk of negative interactions when taken with other meds. Be sure to talk with a doctor about potential risks, and keep them informed about all medications like blood pressure and diabetes meds and natural herbs/vitamins/supplements taken for other medical conditions.

COX-2 Inhibitors

Cyclo-oxygenase-2 or COX-2 inhibitors are a prescription NSAID medication type that is formulated to target specific enzymes that trigger inflammation. Inflammation is not just a symptom but can also be a cause of pain related to many different spinal disorders. COX-2 inhibitors have a lower risk of causing/contributing to gastrointestinal problems.

There are other potential side effects and risks associated with COX-2 inhibitors. Potential side effects include an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, like a heart attack or blood clots. COX-2 inhibitors reduce the risk of stomach problems than classic NSAIDs but if gastrointestinal conditions exist to talk with a doctor before taking these medications.

Opioids

These are highly potent analgesics and are no longer the first type of pain-relieving medication that a doctor prescribes. They are now to be the last resort for reducing moderate to severe pain symptoms. These medications work by decreasing the perception and reaction to the pain. Opioids are prescribed for short-term use following surgical procedures and trauma. However, there are different situations where use is appropriate. When opioids are recommended, the doctor will begin with the lowest strength/dosage to manage the pain. Types of opioids include:

• Codeine
• Hydrocodone
• Hydromorphone
• Oxycodone
• Meperidine
• Tramadol

Opioids have an increased risk for addiction and abuse. If an opioid-based medication is prescribed the medication is safe and effective as long as it is used exactly as the doctor instructs. Side effects can include:

• Drowsiness
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Euphoria
• Slowed breathing

A Pain Helper

Analgesic medications are commonly used for various types of pain-causing conditions. When they are used properly with a doctor’s supervision they are safe and effective at managing pain and discomfort. If new symptoms present and/or the pain worsens or becomes different contact your doctor on appropriate instructions.

Calcium is vital to bone health, and as long as you are getting enough supplements are not necessary. Calcium is a primary building block for strong, healthy bones, especially the bones of the spine. A diet rich in Ca can help prevent spinal problems/issues/conditions like spinal fractures and osteoporosis.

The best and easiest way to get the proper amount of calcium is by eating plenty of Ca-rich foods. However, calcium supplements could be utilized to ensure the proper amount is taken every day. To determine if you may need a calcium supplement talk with your doctor to make sure it’s the best option for you.

Calcium Supplements

Calcium supplements can help individuals reach the daily recommended amount, but they are not intended to replace real Ca-rich foods. If there is enough Ca in your diet, a supplement won't be necessary, unless there is an underlying condition that doesn't allow the individual to eat certain Ca-rich foods. However, if there is only a lack of sufficient calcium intake then supplements could help. Otherwise, if there is a continued lack of Ca it could be detrimental to bones and overall health.

Proper Amount Every Day

Before considering a supplement, it’s essential to know how much calcium you should be getting each day. Daily recommendations vary by age and sex but largely depend on age:

• Men and women age 19-50, including pregnant women, require 1,000 mg a day
• Men 51-70 require 1,000 mg a day
• Women 51-70 require 1,200 mg a day
• The elderly 71 and over require 1,200 mg a day

Your Diet

Once you know how much Ca you need, the next step is to evaluate how much to get. The American Bone Health advocacy group recommends using the Calcium Rule of 300 to determine if a supplement is necessary.

The way it works:

• Begin with the number of dairy or juices with added calcium and the amount that is consumed daily.
• Multiply that number by 300.
• Add 300 if a nutritious and balanced diet is being observed
• The total is the proper dietary intake of calcium
• If the total does not meet the recommended number consult a doctor or health coach about a calcium supplement.

Supplement Tips

If you decide to take a supplement, check out these tips:

• Make sure your doctor/pharmacist know all medications and supplements being taken, this includes over-the-counter products. The reason for this is your doctor wants so be sure they will not interfere with each other or have some kind of negative side effect. An example of this is calcium and iron supplements can prevent each other from properly absorbing into the body when taken together.
• Buy supplements that have the USP Verified symbol, which shows that the supplement has been independently evaluated and certified. 

• Rather than taking one high-dose calcium supplement, which could be more than 500-600 mg. Smaller-doses of supplements can be taken 2-3 times throughout the day.
• The body cannot absorb more than 500-600 mg of calcium supplement at once
• Drink plenty of water with the supplement, as certain types can cause constipation
• Don’t take the supplement with a high-fiber meal or laxative. This fiber can prevent the body from fully absorbing the calcium

There are all kinds of nutrients that contribute to the development and maintenance of healthy bones, but calcium is backed by a strong body of evidence that presents a clear connection to bone health. A simple and straight-forward focus on eating foods rich in calcium can help keep the bones of the spine, and entire body for that matter strong and supportive for life-long healthy movement.

Back Pain Management

There are different kinds of head and upper cervical disorders that are also known as:

• Upper neck disorders
• Craniovertebral junction - CVJ - abnormality
• Craniocervical disorders

Some are present at birth while others are developed later in life. Whether congenital or acquired, they share many of the same symptoms.

Neck Pain/Headache

Where your skull and spine meet is where upper cervical disorders take place. Neck pain along with headaches along the back of the head are the most common symptoms. People with craniocervical disorders often experience neck pain and headache in combination and symptoms worsen with head and neck movement. Even just a sneeze or cough can cause pain. Neck pain can also spread to the arms if spinal nerves are compressed.

Spinal Cord Compression

The more complex upper cervical disorders involve spinal cord compression. When the spinal cord gets compressed, nerve-problems can happen that make daily function a challenge.

With spinal cord compression, neurological symptoms can present like:

• Weakness in the arms, legs or both
• Loss of sensation and awareness of the limbs called positional sense
• There can be an electrical/shooting pain or tingling running down the spine and into the legs when pitching the neck forward called Lhermitte sign
• Hot and cold sensational loss in hands, feet or both
• Reduced sensation of pain

Other Symptoms of Craniocervical Disorder

Some disorders have their own set of symptoms.

• Change in neck appearance
• Reduced range of motion

There are abnormalities like:

1. Basilar invagination
2. Platybasia
3. Klippel-Feil

All of these can cause malformation and physical changes in the neck. The neck may appear short, webbed, or twisted. There can also be a limited ability to move the neck.

Symptoms can also be caused by brain and cranial nerve pressure.

Conditions like platybasia, basilar invagination, and craniocervical tumors can place pressure on the brain stem and the cranial nerves around it. If this happens the following symptoms can occur:

• Eye issues like abnormal eye movements and double vision
• Throat and speech problems like hoarseness, slurred speech, and swallowing problems
• Loss of coordination
• Sleep problems like sleep apnea

Vertigo Faint Feeling

Some individuals could experience a set of symptoms that don't occur too often called vertebrobasilar ischemia.

This happens when the head position changes placing pressure on the cranial arteries and cutting off the blood supply.

The result is:

• Weakness
• Confusion
• Light-headedness
• Feeling faint
• Vertigo or a dizzy spinning sensation

Syringomyelia

Syringomyelia is a fluid-filled cyst known as a syrinx that forms inside the spinal cord. If the cyst grows, it can damage the spinal cord causing painful neurological symptoms throughout the body that include weakness, and numbness. In extreme cases loss of ability to feel heat or cold in the neck, hands, and possibly throughout the spine. The hand muscles can become paralyzed.

Quality of Life with Upper Cervical Disorder

While some individuals have no symptoms associated with a craniocervical disorder, others experience intense pain and neurological dysfunction. There are treatment options that can help you successfully manage and eliminate symptoms.

Chiropractic

When headaches present it usually means there is a misalignment in the cervical spine. This is often combined with tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and surrounding area. Pressure on the nerves can cause sharp shooting pain along with a continual dull throbbing sensation.

A chiropractor will assess the area and then move forward with an adjustment to relieve the pressure and pain. Chiropractic medicine does not just focus on relieving symptoms but finding the root cause and correcting the problem. In addition, the chiropractor will take the time to educate you on the importance of diet, exercise, stretching and making healthy lifestyle choices.

Whiplash Massage Therapy

Individuals with chronic back and neck pain often have sleeping problems/disorders because of their pain. This is usually the case as the connection between chronic pain and not being able to sleep goes hand in hand. However, it goes a bit deeper than that.

People that have chronic back or neck pain and struggle with sleep, assume it’s the pain that is keeping you from a sound sleep. Around two-thirds of individuals with chronic pain have sleeping problems that usually lead to sleep disorders. Research is finding that pain and insomnia have a mutual relationship.

Managing chronic back pain is a tough challenge. Add to that poor sleep and your quality of life just goes down. Here we explore the relationship between chronic pain and insomnia and offer some strategies to get proper sleep while managing your pain.

Insomnia #1 Sleep Complaint

Insomnia is the number one sleep problem, but there is some misunderstanding as to what it is.

1. Insomnia is not just about not being able to fall and stay asleep.
2. Insomnia is not an isolated condition/disorder but a symptom.
3. It is characterized by waking up throughout the night.
4. It causes troubled sleep.

Understanding the root cause is the way to approach the problem.

About half of insomnia cases are a result of a mental or emotional condition, like anxiety or depression both are common in people with chronic back or neck pain. Insomnia affects sleep quality and the U.S. health care system. In the United States lost work productivity brought on by insomnia is estimated to run around $63.2 billion per year, as reported by the journal Sleep. It also takes a toll on work accidents at around $31 billion per year, according to the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Insomnia and Chronic Pain

Researchers have found it’s not as simple as chronic pain-causing insomnia but it does play a big role. Here are findings from three studies to illustrate the connection between chronic back pain and insomnia.

Chronic pain and insomnia are close.

Addressing your back pain early will benefit your spinal and body health tremendously. A study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery found that nearly half of the individuals had both chronic back pain and insomnia. They recommended early treatment of back pain to avoid worsening the injury and serious complications from insomnia.

Does poor sleep equal to more pain?

It is not the pain but the feelings of pain. A study in the journal of Sleep found insomnia can intensify your perception of how the pain is going to be the next day. The poor sleep does not cause added pain, but it can make you highly sensitive to the sensation of pain.

Can cognitive behavioral therapy work?

A study in Sleep Medicine followed patients who had chronic pain and used cognitive behavioral therapy for their insomnia. The results found that cognitive-behavioral therapy can effectively treat sleep problems in patients with chronic pain.

Being Able to Sleep with Chronic Pain

Release Therapy

While computed tomography scanning, or CT scans, of the cervical spine are frequently utilized to help diagnose neck injuries, simple radiographs are still commonly performed for patients who have experienced minor cervical spine injuries with moderate neck pain, such as those who have suffered a slip-and-fall accident. Imaging diagnostic assessments may reveal underlying injuries and/or aggravated conditions to be more severe than the nature of the trauma. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the significance of cervical spine radiographs in the trauma patient.

Improper posture affects the whole body and can lead to various pain issues throughout the body. Correcting posture is recommended before trying to correct it when pain begins to present. If pain is presenting, chiropractic treatment will bring relief, stabilize the spine, realign/balance the body, and educate the individual on maintaining proper posture through stretches, exercises, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments.  

Improper posture symptoms

Neck Pain

Discomfort, stiffness, tightness, and pain are common when sitting at a workstation. This comes from a forward head/head jutting position. The head pushes forward and is not aligned with the shoulders. This means that the neck takes on a compromised position. The head forward position places significant strain on the neck muscles. Because of this neck discomfort and pain often occur later in the afternoon and evening. If not sure whether head jutting is taking place, try placing the chin to the chest. If not able or if there is discomfort/pain in the upper back, there is some forward head jutting.

Shoulder Discomfort and Pain

When we sit for extended periods, the body relaxes muscles that would normally be used if standing. One set of muscles is in the upper back. This causes slouching with a rounded upper back/shoulders. The more time the body stays in any one position, the more it begins to conform to the unhealthy position. This also causes pain in the upper, front part of the shoulders. The pain is noticeable when trying to bring the arm/s overhead or when trying to perform exercises like pushups or pullups.

Regular Headaches

Regular headaches are another symptom of improper posture. Forward head posture is usually a contributor combined with the long hours sitting or standing. However, headaches can be caused by a variety of causes that include:

• Stress
• Tension
• Dehydration

Low Back, Tailbone Discomfort, and Pain

Lower back pain is a very common symptom of improper posture. For individuals under 40, pain and discomfort present because of improper posture while sitting or standing and a lack of stretching and exercise. Sitting for a long time causes the muscles that bring the thighs towards the chest, known as the hip flexors to be consistently flexed, with no relief. This causes the hip flexors to shorten and tighten. This pulls the pelvis out towards the front of the body, creating an exaggerated spinal curve.

Buttocks or Stomach Pushes Outward

Take a look at the body's profile, does the butt and/or stomach stick out? If so this could be hyperlordosis also known as Donald duck posture. This can come from wearing high heels too much, the body having to carry extra weight in the stomach area, and sometimes this comes from pregnancy. Sometimes, this happens when individuals stand with their knees locked. This causes the rear end and/or belly to push out.

Correcting Improper Posture

The main problem with correcting posture is the ability to maintain proper posture. Many individuals go back to the unhealthy positioning without recognizing that they are doing it. There are devices to help correct poor posture habits. This could be a brace or harness that detects when the body is slouching and vibrates to let the individual return to a proper position.

Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy

The most effective and thorough way to correct years of improper posture is to see a professional chiropractor. A complete diagnosis, inspection, and analysis of an individual's posture when sitting, standing, walking, and running will be done. They will educate the individual on correct posture, how to achieve and maintain it. This makes them not the best choice for individuals trying to lose calories. Take a look at some of the additional ingredients:

Electrolytes

Minerals, like potassium, sodium, and magnesium, have an electric charge that helps maintain the body’s ionic balance. The body loses electrolytes when sweating. A sports drink can help replace the lost electrolytes.

Carbohydrates

Most of the carbohydrates come from sugars. Carbohydrates are one of the body’s energy sources and sports drinks are designed to refuel the body after hard physical activity.

Amino acids

These are protein building blocks. Drinking a sports drink after an intense workout can help the body recover quicker. Therefore, some of the additional ingredients in sports drinks offer hydration extras that water on its own cannot. However, water should always be the first drink of choice. But there are certain times when a sports drink is what the body needs.

• When participating in high-intensity physical activities, workouts, sports that last longer than 45 minutes to an hour. Here a sports drinks can help replenish the body’s electrolytes better than water.
• Individuals that sweat high levels of sodium (look for sweat stains/rings on skin or clothing) can benefit from re-hydrating with a sports drink.
• Endurance athletes, triathletes, marathon runners, long-distance athletes, etc can also benefit from a sports drink, from the increased fluid loss.
• In these activities, athletes should make sure the sports drink they are consuming contains carbohydrates and electrolytes.

Acetaminophen, best known as Tylenol, is one of the most common medications for headaches and general pain. More than likely the most common back, neck, and overall pain medication around. However, it is only a pain reducer, and will not reduce inflammation.

Doctors often recommend this medicine before moving on to prescription medication. A member of the analgesic pain reliever class of medications. These can vary in strength along with side effects, but their purpose is to reduce pain. Acetaminophen can be found in over 600 prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, including certain opioids. Other acetaminophen brand names include:

• Tylophen
• Tempra
• FeverAll
• Mapap
• Pharbetol
• Panadol

Strength and Weakness

When neck or back pain presents, over-the-counter medicines fall into two categories. These are acetaminophen or non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs also known as NSAIDs. Acetaminophen and NSAIDs like Advil, aspirin both relieve pain. However, non-steroid anti-inflammatories also help in reducing inflammation. Although non-steroid anti-inflammatories have this added benefit, they can also present potential side effects like stomach and gastrointestinal problems.

A spinal sprain or strain can cause acute back pain. Acetaminophen is typically recommended for acute back or neck pain and for pain that comes and goes quickly. Individuals that experience periodic pain usually take acetaminophen when the pain flares up. Individuals with chronic spinal pain report acetaminophen help to alleviate/reduce the pain. Many with chronic pain use acetaminophen regularly and not only when the pain presents. This helps manage before pain strikes.

Safety

Acetaminophen is gentle on the stomach, making some individuals preferring it over the non-steroid anti-inflammatories. But just like any other medication acetaminophen has its risks and can cause severe damage if used improperly.

Taking acetaminophen in large doses can cause severe liver damage. The Food and Drug Administration reports that acetaminophen overdoses send over fifty-thousand individuals to the emergency room every year. And over one-hundred Americans die yearly from accidental overdoses.

Using acetaminophen safely means taking no more than 3,000 milligrams a day and no more than 1,000 milligrams at a time. Take extra precautions when taking extra-strength. These can include as much as 650 mg per pill/capsule.

Before taking acetaminophen for back and neck pain, talk to a doctor or pharmacist about the proper dosage. And tell the doctor about all the medications being taken including natural herbs and holistic. Another reason for telling the doctor is that many other medications have acetaminophen included without you knowing it. Part of the discussion should include alcohol consumption. This can elevate the risk of negative reactions.

If non-pharmacological treatments/therapies done for at least 4 months prove ineffective then an acetaminophen regimen could be a safe and effective part of a back and neck pain treatment plan. While this medicine is one of the most common treatments, it is not without risks and side effects. We are familiar with neck stiffness or a crick. This can prevent us from comfortably moving the head all around. A crick can cause the spine, and shoulders to feel rigid and stressed from not being able to turn around and could cause an upper or low-back strain from having to turn the whole body to look back or even just to the side. Chiropractic treatment is available and will help, along with some self-care therapies that can be done at home.

Crick in the Neck vs. Neck Stiffness

A crick in the neck is the same as a stiff neck. It develops when the neck muscles, tendons, and ligaments become strained/sprained. Most strains and sprains are minor but do cause inflammation/swelling of the neck’s soft tissues, which results in stiffness and, at times muscle spasms.

The symptoms
